Business 101: update your Google business listing

Operating as a sole trader or running a small business is hard enough without having to think about how to get more eyes on your business. One of the easiest things you can do is correctly set up your Google business listing. It’s free and easy — and something you can do even when you don’t have as much work coming in.

Why should you update your Google business listing?

Let people know exactly what you do.

If you don’t have the type of service that you offer in your business name (i.e. John Smith), customers might not know what you can do for them. If you properly categorise your business, you’ll find that you get more people contacting you for work.

Get discovered in Google searches AKA Improve your SEO

Improving your SEO (search engine optimization) doesn’t need to seem so daunting. One of the easiest ways to improve your website’s SEO is to update your Google listing. The more you and your business are featured online, the better (as long as it’s relevant). You’re more likely to end up in a local customer’s search results if you have an updated listing.

Make sure your Google business listing is up-to-date and as detailed as possible. If you offer multiple services as a plasterer or plumber, say so!

Allow people to contact you the right way.

Do you want people to know how and when to contact you? Do you have a website? A phone number? A physical address? Let people know!

After people have found you in an online search, you’ll want to offer them the best ways to get a hold of you. Don’t you hate it when a business doesn’t have their phone number listed? So do your potential customers. Make it easier to connect with you and you’ll find a boost in leads.

Update your business information

Google-ing how to update your Google business feels silly, but it’s the best place to start. Google offers plenty of ‘how-tos’ and FAQs for its services.

First, sign up and verify your business if you haven’t yet done so.

Then, log in to Google My Business to update your business information.

Update the basics:

  • Business hours
  • Physical address (If this has changed, you’ll need to complete the verification process again.)
  • Phone number
  • Category (What kind of business do you run?)
  • Website

Even this simple step will significantly improve your ability to get your business noticed by more people. If you have a bit more time, you can move on to making your listing even better with photos and responding to customer reviews.
